Medical

Medical missions have always been a large part of Life Connection Mission. It is part of our mission statement and something we consider very serious. The need is very great in Haiti and specifically Montrouis. At this time there is no fulltime medical care in Montrouis. Our medical missions supply a large part of the medical care for the area. Our missions have cared for thousands of needy people and done hundreds of surgery. We are confident this has saved many lives and alleviated much suffering.

Recently a new medical building is being completed. This will greatly aide in the care for the people and allow medical missions to be able to provide better medical care. We started out doing clinics and surgery in the open and under the trees and in churches or schools that were available. This new building dedicated to medical care will be a blessing for the Montrouis area. In the near future we would like to employ a Hatian nurse to be fulltime in the clinic and to assist with healthcare and training at our school. Also in the near future employing a Hatian doctor for the clinic is in the goal. Hopefully in the near future we would be helping the Hatian nurse and doctor to be able to care for their own.

There is always a great medical need in the Montrouis area, and American volunteers are greatly needed. These volunteers can be doctors, nurses, emergency medical personnel, or anyone with the desire to help medically. It is a real blessing to help others medically and see lives saved and suffering alleviated. Please consider this opportunity to serve. If not able to physically help in this mission, financial assistance is welcomed.

The Need for Good Medical Care:

Jacky–Thieng Casimir, a 14-year-old boy in the 4th grade and attends the Life Connection Mission school in Montrouis sustained life threatening injuries from a fall from a breadfruit tree on February 6, 2009. His subsequent plight to receive medical care has been a lesson to mission staff about the grim realities of the health care system in Haiti.

As no ambulance was available, Jacky was transported to the hospital in the bed of a pick-up truck without any of the usual precautionary devices to immobilize and prevent further trauma. Jacky ultimately endured a grueling 2.5-hour journey to Gonaives. The initial diagnosis indicated internal bleeding requiring immediate surgery. Jacky’s liver was lacerated and bleeding. X-rays also revealed a fractured left arm and right ankle, and casts were placed on both. The ankle cast is secured to the frame of the bed to further immobilize the ankle. There is a lack of adaptive orthopedic equipment in Haiti. Jacky’s father informed us of his insurmountable task of obtaining the blood needed for transfusion as requested by the attending physician. When in need of blood for a family member, you must provide the funds for family members, friends, or people on the street to go to the clinic for screening. Each pint donated is exchanged for a pint of blood that is a match for your family member for a fee. The family is required to bring a container and ice to keep it cold and is personally responsible for transporting and delivering the blood to the hospital. All of the blood was purchased at La Croige with money donated through LCM and was delivered to the hospital on February 14. In Haiti, a family member must also remain with the patient at all times to provide care. It is their responsibility to feed, bathe, position, and assist with other personal care. All linens and clothing must be laundered by the family member.

Alex Binot and Roberto Lucien traveled to Jacky’s hospital to visit him. He was so overwhelmed to see them that tears streamed down his face as they made eye contact. Alex and Roberto listened with compassion and understanding as Jacky talked about his ordeal. Roberto asked Jacky if he had a message for his classmates. “By the grace of God I know that I will heal.” He also asked Roberto to tell his sponsor, “Be strong for me. As I lie in this hospital bed I pray for you.” Thankfully, because Jacky is sponsored, the mission was able to assist with his medical expenses and care. Because of everyone’s prayers, Jacky has made a full recovery.

“Hold fast to God’s hand and He will lead you safely through all trials. Whenever you cannot stand, He will carry you lovingly in His arms.” St. Francis de Sales

For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.
